All money raised through donations will go directly towards homebound’s two beneficiaries, Dar Sagra Familja and The Scout Association of Malta’s Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite. The total amount collected will be divided equally between the two, with each therefore receiving half the final sum.
What/who are these beneficiaries?
- Dar Sagra Familja
Dar Sagra Familja is located in Zabbar, Malta, and run by the Sisters of St Joseph. It offers a home to around 20 children coming from troubled families. The home is divided into two apartments and cares from children aged two and above, with some remaining there well into their adolescent years. Dar Sagra Familja provides holistic care to its residents. They are given all the support needed to receive an education, build a solid future and integrate better into society.
The home’s needs vary, with expenses ranging from annual school supplies for its residents to the day-to-day maintenance costs of the large building.
- The Scout Association of Malta’s Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite
The Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite, located on the western coast of Malta, is rather unique for being one of the only official campsites on the island where individuals can come together and enjoy nature at its best. While other campsites do exist, these are generally small and none approaches the 16 acres offered by Ghajn Tuffieha. Yet the site, managed by the Scout Association of Malta, relies almost entirely on volunteers for its upkeep and ongoing embellishment, and is very much in need of funding to support a number of projects which are currently under way. These include re-fitting two existing buildings, with one destined to be a dining hall/kitchen and the other a dormitory.
The campsite is frequently used by Malta’s numerous scout groups, as well as being open to the public. Click here to read more about it.
Why have they been chosen?
Both of the above causes aid in the continuous growth and development of society’s greatest asset, its young generation.
Each does so in a rather different way. Dar Sagra Familja directly helps out a number of children coming from troubled backgrounds. Meanwhile, the Ghajn Tuffieha Campsite brings together kids and youth, both scouts and non-scouts alike, in a healthy and controlled environment where they are able to interact together and learn to appreciate life at its simplest.
On a personal level, I’ve been a scout ever since the age of 8, first with the St. Aloysius’ College and later with the 1st Sliema Scout Group. I know my scouting experience has definitely played a large part in making me who I am today, and I’ve also been able to witness first-hand how beneficial it’s been to countless others. The annual camps and other activities held at the Ghajn Tuffieha campsite were of course no exception.
The connection with Dar Sagra Familja is maybe less of a personal one, yet a meaningful one nonetheless. I wanted to reach out to a second beneficiary, and when a friend referred me to the home, I knew I’d come across the worthwhile cause I’d been looking for.
